When I first received this book for free, I was actually pretty excited about reading it because I just moved into a new apartment with my boyfriend and we enjoy cooking our meals together. Although I knew it was a beginner’s guide, I don’t consider myself a cooking expert by any means and figured I could learn a few new tricks for him. Unfortunately, the information provided (again I know it’s stressed that it is a quick guide), was more so for someone who has never turned on a stove. I burn things pretty frequently, so it says a lot that I did not learn anything new from reading it. For those that are extreme novices to the art of cooking, it may be useful. The introduction is a bit cheesy (no pun intended), but provides a simple lead-in to what the book will be about including: determining right portion sizes, how to shop for two, meal and menu planning, kitchen tools and equipment, baking, and how to manage leftovers. That pretty much covers the first half and the majority of the book. The second portion is dedicated to 21 easy recipes the author provides that have absolutely no connection to each other. For a guide on cooking for two, I think there either should have been a theme section of recipes or different menu ideas, and at the very least, pictures for every single recipe since those were the best part of the entire piece. The book ends abruptly with a list of further cooking resources both in print and online. I think a small conclusion would have tied the loose ends together a bit better.Product details

All About Cooking for Two A Very Quick Guide edition by Janet Zimmerman Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed reading this cook book! It gave me a lot of great ideas on how to scale down recipes for just me and my boyfriend. Normally I would just make a full recipe and eat the leftovers for days or until I just couldn't do it anymore and throw it away. After reading this book though, its almost like you have permission to change the measurements of the recipes! I know that sounds silly, but I felt kind of freed up after reading this to change the sizes of the recipes. I'm anxious to apply some of the things I read about in this book about techniques for freezing ingredients and how to cut recipes in half. Also, who doesn't love extra recipes at the back of the book?! This was a good read and it was full of great tips and tricks.
I received this book for free as a trade for my honest review.
This is a good cookbook for the novice cook, which would include someone who is both new to cooking and new to the logistics of cooking for two. Much of it is common sense -- such as estimating portion control by dividing a given recipe in half. I've been cooking awhile, and generally cook for 1 or 2 people, so much of what this book has to offer was already known to me. But the sections on different types of foods, and what amounts and types are best for 2 person dining, was useful. Also, enjoyed a few of the recipes I've sampled, such as the one on roasted brussel sprouts. I've often had it with bacon, but the balsamic glaze was new to me, and a welcome addition. I received this book for free, and don't know that I would have gone out of my way to buy it, but it will come in handy.
What an odd little e-book. I can't help but feel ambivalent about it. I don't know if it's warranted or not. I have never in my life required a cookbook for just two people. I have always just been of a mind that you save the leftovers or whatever. I feel a bit funny reducing recipes, and wonder if it's worth the time and effort. That being said, this book did offer some handy tips and hints, such as yields and which items freeze well and which don't (mashed taters are a no no- who knew?).
My favorite part of this cookbook was the actual recipes, from savory to desert dishes, they look tasty and easy. I will probably have to double whichever ones I do make. This cookbook may make a nice gift for the fumbling couple just starting out.

Cooking for Two is really two books in one. Part One tells you how two people can cook together. Part Two gives you some examples of what they can make. I bought this book for Part One because I wanted to learn how to cook with my girl friend, not for her. Some of the advice rendered by the author seems simple but it really is important in the kitchen. As an example keeping the pan handles turned towards the back of the stove gets to be mote important when two are in the kitchen at the same time. I thought the sections on Essential Kitchen Tools was helpful and in Baking Tools for Two I learned what a Springform Pan is for and what a Ramekin is.
I expected something a bit more exciting for recipes, but the Spicy Broccoli with Oyster Sauce was just brilliant. On the second try, my girlfriend and I tried Orange Marmalade in place of the Orange Juice and it was even better.
One last point, this handy little book is just under 6” x 5”and fits up on that shelf where I keep my spices – very handy! Great little book!
My wife is a pastry chef who works long hours and I work out of the home. This book is immensely helpful as I have food duties now. Thankfully, the recipes are easy to follow and dishes we love to eat. The Greek-style quinoa salad is a particular favorite. We’re vegetarian and using vegetable stock instead of chicken is a no-brainer. I was worried about trying the spinach and mushroom frittata and I managed it without injuring myself –WIN! Seriously, give Cooking for Two a try. It was worth buying just for the 5 Crucial Freezing and Thawing Tips section alone. I never knew I needed to push the air out of the pouch before freezing. Crazy!
